ON A TEST WINNING STREAK – CHILD CAR SEATS WITH IMPACT SHIELD SYSTEMS

Child car seats with impact shield systems (safety cushions) regularly achieve the top result in tests by Stiftung Warentest and ADAC, and lead the top scorers in the respective groups. A comparison of the Stiftung Warentest test results in the period from 2007 to 2012, reveals that the TOP 3 in Group I (9-18 kg, approx. 9 months to 4 years) are child car seats with impact shields. Among the child car seats that grow with the child in the Group I/II/III (9-36 kg, approx. 9 months to 12 years), the superiority of the systems with impact shields is even clearer: 9 child car seats out of the TOP 10 are child car seats featuring this safety technology with excellent results in the category of accident safety.

WHAT IS THE SAFEST WAY OF TRANSPORTING BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN IN CARS?

Confirmed by many tests by prestigious institutions and consumer organisations, the safest way of transporting babies and small children in cars is

  • either facing backwards in rear-facing car seats, closely followed by
  • forward-facing child car seats with impact shields.

The impact shield system is similar to an inflated airbag. The energy of the impact is evenly distributed. The overall force is therefore considerably milder than with integral harness belt systems. The belt does not cut into the skin and dangerous whiplash injuries are prevented because the head is not abruptly flung backwards or forwards.

With forward-facing child car seats with a belt harness, the child’s shoulders are held back while the head is flung forward with enormous force in the case of a frontal collision. This can lead to the upper spine being stretched – with possibly dramatic consequences for the child. With belt harness systems there are unfortunately countless accident reports, statistics and studies relating to severe or even fatal injuries that are usually caused by injuries to the nape of the neck. In many cases, injuries to the nape of the neck lead to paraplegia and in the worst-case scenario are fatal. Because frontal impacts are almost always linked to high speeds, the child is subjected to an immense impact force. This is where the huge advantage of an impact shield becomes clear. Crash tests with good belt harness systems show considerably higher values in critical neck injuries compared to good impact shield systems.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON ROAD ACCIDENTS?

Frontal collisions are the most common accident in day-to-day traffic, accounting for about 59% of accidents. Side-impact collisions account for about 27%, rear-impact collisions for 8%, and rollovers for 3%. Around 93% of the injury costs are due to frontal and side-impact crashes. Only 5% of costs are related to rear-impact collisions and only around 1% to rollovers.*

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE CYBEX SAFETY CUSHION?

The CYBEX safety cushions are equipped with a depth-adjustment mechanism (patent pending). The safety cushion is therefore able to easily adjust to the child’s body. CYBEX is constantly working on improvements in the area of impact shield technology. For example, with the Group 0+/I combination seat SIRONA, the new, patent-pending Active Response Technology ensures that in case of an accident, the child is actively held in the safety zone of the seat by the safety cushion in the forward-facing position. The new, integrated fastening system (patent also pending), makes it unnecessary to additionally secure the safety cushion with the car seat belt.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST …

In the latest child car seat test 06/2012, Stiftung Warentest and ADAC gave a child car seat from Groups I, II and III the top rating “VERY GOOD” in the category of accident safety – the first time they have done so in their decades of testing. The 2012 test winner CYBEX Juno-fix (Group I) –

AN IMPACT SHIELD SYSTEM!

Infant carriers in Group 0+ have already enjoyed numerous “Very Good” ratings in this category.
